About the Site

What is this place?

Social Commentary (with Hunky Dreamboats!) was created by a group of Jane Austen fans frustrated by the lack of honesty and tired of the “cult of (faux) niceness” and cheerleaderish quality of other Jane Austen fanfiction recommendation, review and commentary sites. It is not our intention to be malicious; however, we will be writing honest critiques.

The site’s title comes from a comic by the fabulous Kate Beaton of Hark! A Vagrant fame.  Thanks Kate!

Meet the Reviewers!

Argus Filch enjoys quiet nights alone with his cat and Mansfield Park. He hates children, especially dirty ones.

Empress Maud, once British princess, Emperor’s widow, and rightful Lady of the English, has in recent centuries settled into the comfortable life of an immortal time-travelling critic.

She dislikes misogynistic assholes and incompetent minions.  She likes cats, jewels, telling people what to think, and robots with really excellent AI.

Lady Christian Henrietta Caroline Acland (nee Fox-Strangways) is every bit as pretentious as her name would suggest. When not rowing into enemy territory to nurse her husband’s battle wounds, she can usually be found with her head in a book.

Say, will Fitzwilliam ever want a heart?
Cheerful, his ready blessings to impart?
Will not a mother’s woe his bosom share,
The widow’s sorrow and the orphan’s prayer?
Who aids the old, who soothes the mother’s cry,
Who wipes the tear from off the virgin’s eye?
Who feeds the hungry? who assists the lame?
All, all re-echo with Fitzwilliam‘s name.

Martha enjoys drinking, hosting salons, skydiving and gin.  She lives in New England with her husband George.

When Miss Kenton is not presiding over the housekeeping or flirting ineffectually with the butler, she engages in wistful gazing out of windows and reminiscing about the past. She enjoys banter, letter writing, keeping things in good order, and can often be found attempting to gloat when she is proved right. Miss Kenton has excellent posture and a very defiant chin.

Oofy Prosser is far more British than you. He enjoys snappy dialogue and a distinct lack of brooding.  Although blessed with a multiplicity of talents, he has no plans to go skydiving or learn the bazooka. In his free time, he is a superhero.

The Lady Orlando takes identitybending to the next level: her current goal is becoming the ultimate feline. An invigorating stretch in the sun, elegantly pointing tail, curling up with her nose in a delicious story, what more is there to be wished for…

But stay, what is that sound? Is that a contented purr or a disdainful hiss?
